What is an Article Processing Charge (APC)?

  • The APC is one-off fee which is charged to authors involved in making a work available as open access (OA), in either a full OA journal or in a hybrid journal, which means your research article will be available to anyone with online access.
  • The APC is paid by either the author, the funder, or the institution. ATU Library does not provide funds for APCs.
  • The APC is payable when your manuscript is accepted, but before it is published.
  • The APC fees vary by journal, the average cost of an APC is approx. €2,000- €2,500 per paper but can be significantly higher.
  • Check the Directory of OA Journals, DOAJ, for non-APC journals, which lists over 13,000 OA journals without APCs.
  • There are a number of free APCs given to each Irish institution through IReL, and these are given on a first come first serve basis (limited annual quota).
