EndNote Online

This guide shows how to use EndNote Online

Creating Groups

EndNote Online inserts references automatically into an 'Unfiled' group. However, if you have a lot of references for different topics or you want to share groups of references with other students or staff, then EndNote Online has the facility to create groups of references.

Create a new group

  1. Click the Organize tab and select 'Manage My Groups'
  2. Click the 'New group' button in the My groups table
  3. Enter a name in the text box provided
  4. Click the OK button.

Adding References to a Group

When you click on 'All my references' in EndNote Online, you will see an 'Add to Group' option just above your list of references.

  • Tick the boxes next to the references you want to add to a particular group
  • Use the drop down arrow in the 'Add to Group' option to select the group name you want
  • Click on that name or create a new group, if desired.

Finding Duplicates

  1. Click on ‘Organize’ and ‘Find Duplicates
  2. Your references are compared by the Author, Year, Title and Reference Field types and references identified as duplicates will be ticked.
  3. Click the ‘Delete’ button to remove duplicates.

Managing Attachments

You can add attachments (e.g. PDFs) to references in your EndNote Online Library.

To Add Attachments:

  1. Click ‘My References’ to display all of your references
  2. Click on the title of the reference to which you want to add the attachment
  3. Click ‘Attach files’ in the record for the reference to open the File Attachments window

  1. Choose the file you want to upload and Open
  2. Click 'Upload' and the file will be attached to your record

Deleting Attachments

  1. Click 'Organise' and 'Manage Attachments'
  2. Tick the box of the attachment to be deleted
  3. Click 'Delete attachments' (located just above your list of attachments) and Ok.

Creating a Stand Alone Bibliography

EndNote Online allows you to create a bibliography or reference list in a specific referencing style so that you can email, print or save it. You may need to submit this to your supervisor at interim stages during your thesis writing.

  1. In EndNote Online, select 'Format' and click Bibliography
  2. Select a group or 'Unfiled' from the References drop-down menu
  3. Select the style you require from the Bibliographic Style drop-down menu (e.g. ATU Harvard)
  4. Choose a file format (e.g. RTF for using in MS Word)
  5. Click Save, E-mail or Preview & Print.
