Library Essentials - Galway Mayo

Welcome to ATU Library

What does the library have?

Books, ebooks, journals, magazines, newspapers, DVD's, theses, exam papers and more.

How can I find what I'm looking for?

  • Use the library website to search for books, ebooks, journal articles, dvds, theses, exam papers and more. atu.ie/library
  • When you find the book you want on the website you’ll see its shelf or class number, this will help you find it in the library.
  • For online items, like eBooks, simply click on the link to read it online. You may be asked to login to view online items. Use your ATU email and password.

For print books and items available within the physical library such as journals, magazines and DVDs, the library's search engine, Search + Find, will tell you:

  • If we have the item in our collection
  • If we have it, in which library location and shelf or class number to find it
  • If it is available or checked out
  • If checked out, the date it is due for return

With regard to location within the library, all material of a similar subject is shelved in the same place using a system called the Dewey classification system. Every book in print will have a classification or shelf or class number, associated with the subject of the title. The LibGuides for each subject area will give you some examples of classification numbers for that subject area. Here is the classification in broad terms, and our campus floors plans will show you the locations:

  • 000 Generalities
  • 100 Philosophy & psychology
  • 200 Religion
  • 300 Social sciences
  • 400 Language
  • 500 Natural sciences & mathematics
  • 600 Technology (Applied sciences)
  • 700 The arts
  • 800 Literature & rhetoric
  • 900 Geography & history
